Song of the Day: Jill Phillips

By

This time around it’s a Jill Phillips song called “Square Peg” that she herself wrote (rather than her husband Andy Gullahorn). I picked this one (from her album Nobody’s Got it all Together) because it was the inspiration for the Square Peg Alliance‘s name, and because I love singing it with her when we do shows together.\

SQUARE PEG
by Jill Phillips

Like a square peg in a round hole
I can’t seem to fit their mold
And make my way past the entrance
I have had my turn to play
But never understood their game
And much less how someone wins it

Always looking in
Never seem to fit
But you’ve been there before
Do you have a place
For losers in this race
Cause I can’t run it anymore

It is said that the rain will fall
Equally upon us all
And there is no rhyme or reason
Still I find myself surprised
When it seems like its my time
To walk in that rainy season

Always looking in
Never seem to fit
But you’ve been there before
Do you have a place
For losers in this race
Cause I can’t run it anymore

Nothing has turned out as planned
And all I have left is to throw up my hands
You never led me the safe way
And this time’s no different
I’ll walk it again, again

Like a square peg in a round hole
I will never fit that mold
So why even try
Why even try

Always looking in
Never seem to fit
But you’ve been there before
Do you have a place
For losers in this race
Cause I can’t run it anymore

Yeah, what a great song. Jill Philips is so talented as a songwriter. I think her husband is the best in the world today, but that is not to overshadow Jill. Some of her stuff if so cutting, poignant. “Do you have a place for losers in this race.” Is that life or what?

Confessions from a girl who can’t even get a spot on open mic night at the non-profit pseudo-coffee house in town. I’ve dreamed of becoming a round peg. For this race I’ve barely begun I am now feeling disqualified. Listening to your song has given me a place to rest my soul. Thanks Jill.

I absolutely love the rock-solid melodies in Jill Phillips’ songs and the lyrics are fantastic whether they’re hers or Gully’s! Thanks for posting this one AP! I have GOT to get some Jill Phillips albums soon.

I LOVE this song. I’m on my fourth listen right now. And I hate it that the English language only has one word for love because if there was something more powerful, more intense, more appreciative, I’d have used it. Listen, I love the music of Jill Phillips and have all of her CDs. But guess, what? Somehow, I missed this one; but not for long. If the rest of the songs are half what this one is, it will be well worth the investment. This is the kind of song I will listen to eight times in a row. Nice choice for Song of the Day, Mr. Proprietor. You keep company with some people that have pretty decent musical skillz.
