• @lisa I’m sorry to hear you’re feeling this way. Glad to hear that you’re still working at it.

A friend edited a short story I was working on, and when I got the MS back from them, I briefly questioned whether I should even be in the writing game, so I can understand that “gloominess” you talk about. I’ll keep your MS in my prayers. Keep us all posted.

  • Oh, and @joeb I use Scrivener, too. Love it for writing but I haven’t quite figured out the best way to use it for editing. Snapshots are great, but what I’ve done is copied the whole she-bang into another new document and am using that to do my edits on. So I always have my original for reference.

I also found it helpful to compile it all into a…[Read more]

  • Oh groan…editing. I am in the midst of editing my first book…a historical fantasy. This is my third go-round. The first two I did myself, this one I saved up and hired a professional editor.

So….now I am slashing and cutting…and trying to follow her recommendations. It’s really hard. I’m having all sorts of second-guesses about it all.…[Read more]

  • Sharon,

The search bar isn’t currently visible because we’ve got some incomplete work going on with the forum structure. Sorry about that. You can edit/delete posts for 24 hours after you post it, then it’s locked. But if there’s something you need deleted for personal reasons, just let me know and I can take care of it.

  • Also, do you know if there is a way to delete a post I made that I no longer want on the Foums?

  • Thank you, Laure. But where is the search bar? I couldn’t find it. I see the search bar for the Rabbit Room, but not one for the Forums. Except for coming to this post and using your link. Thanks again.

    • Great article. I too am preparing to step out of my “single story” and into a small college in Tennessee. One of the many things I am looking forward to is all of the new stories I will encounter in this leap outside my comfort zone (which is currently rural Illinois). It won’t be as big of a culture shift as West Coast to Tennessee (at least I don’t think so…maybe I’m more naive than I think!) but it will still be a huge change for me. I’m eager to discover the community that is waiting there.

  • In the vast amount of music I’ve listened to over the years, there are only a few albums that I’d call “transcendent,” and that looks awfully dramatic now that I see it in writing. But I don’t know how else to p […]

  • Batman’s origin story is full of darkness. Orphaned as a child, taking on a the mantle of a bat to fight crime in the dark of night – no wonder he only works in black (or sometimes, very very dark gray).

    • Hey Pete.  I don’t know if you’re aware but folks keep telling me that when they open the page or follow the link AP posted, the photos are all elongated.  Julie says it’s the host not optimizing it for smaller devices.  I just thought you’d want to know.

  • I was late to the game on Justin Cronin’s The Passage series (The Passage, The Twelve, The City of Mirrors), but I’ve rarely so loved so many characters and then missed them horribly when it was over. I’m reading Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep right now because I adored The Shining and thankfully read it before I saw the film (both are great but very…[Read more]

  • Thank you, Laure, for starting this forum, and to everyone who has contributed.

I have read that it is essential to hire a professional editor before submitting your work for publishing, but I’m sure many first-time authors don’t have the cash for such an investment.  It seems that some of you edit your own work, or ask friends for input?  Or d…[Read more]
