Nobody else had put this on YouTube yet, and I just listened to it on the Here In America CD/DVD combo. (Gem of a project, everyone should go to eBay and find a copy!) This must have been late in 1987, before the song was recorded. Includes a classic Rich reflection at the end. In the Countdown 20 special, he talks about how the best friends bloody your nose and give you a ride home on their bike. This is the only place where I hear him make that analogy to God. He even works in some bittersweet contemplation on the silence of God, which the audience took as a joke, but I’m pretty sure he wasn’t joking.
“Now either pray that God gives you extra breath or helps you quit smoking to get through this song…”
