Purchase! Or Be Eaten

The big day has arrived. NORTH! OR BE EATEN is on the shelves.

It took a year to write, and it clocked in at about 120,000 words. I wrote at home, on the
road, and more than anywhere else at a coffee shop down the street. I read it aloud to my wife and children and took out the boring parts. I drew seven illustrations, two maps, and put the book through three edits. August 18 has been marked on my calendar for a long time, and it’s arrived at last.

Ipicture-1f you like my stories and songs, or if you don’t like stories but you like my songs, or if you don’t like either my songs or stories but you like me, or if you don’t like my work or me but you feel kinda sorry for me, or even if you actively despise my stories, songs, self, and have no pity for me but think my wife and kids are all right, please head over to Amazon or to the Rabbit Room Store and pick up a copy of North! Or Be Eaten. (The ones in the Rabbit Room are autographed, by the way, and you can buy books one and two for a deal, in case you aren’t caught up). You can also head to your local bookstore and pick it up (though I’d call before you made the trip, in case they don’t have any in yet).

I hope you’ll find a comfy chair and a cup of coffee or curl up in the bunk bed with the kids and lose yourself in this story. But beware. The toothy cows are on the loose. As are the horned hounds, snickbuzzards, and Stranders.

Thanks for supporting me and mine.

P.S. Here are a few blurbs from some authors with impeccable literary taste:

“Peterson deserves every literary prize for this fine book. It is obvious that his musical talents have been put to good use as his use of words, plot and narrative read like a well scored film script. A very fine book, by a very fine writer and future talent. Amazing – thrilling and well worth reading again and again.”
–G. P. Taylor, New York Times best-selling author of Shadowmancer and The Dopple Ganger Chronicles

“Toothy cows are very dangerous. Andrew Peterson convinced me and shivers run down my spine at the very thought of meeting a toothy cow face to face. The author spills characters like Podo and Nurgabog onto the page, then weaves a tale of danger that holds the reader captive. Believe me, you will relish being held captive by this master storyteller. But be sure you don’t get caught by the Stranders. Those people just ain’t civilized.”
–Donita K. Paul, author of The Vanishing Sculptor

“In a genre overrun by the gory and the grim, Peterson’s bite-sized chapters taste more like a stew of Gorey (Edward) and Grimm (the Brothers). North! Or Be Eaten is a welcome feast of levity–and clearly a labor of love. Andrew Peterson has awakened my inner eight-year-old, and that is a very good thing.”
–Jeffrey Overstreet, author of Auralia’s Colors and Cyndere’s Midnight

“An immensely clever tale from a wonderful storyteller – filled with great values and even greater adventure!”
–Phil Vischer, creator of VeggieTales

“Thrills, chills, spine-tingling mystery, and lots of smiles. It’s not easy to combine heart-pounding danger with gut-busting laughs and make it work, but Peterson pulls it off. For readers who want nonstop action infused with powerful, life-changing themes, North! Or Be Eaten is a must-read.”
–Wayne Thomas Batson, best-selling author of The Door Within Trilogy, Isle of Swords and Isle of Fire

“Andrew Peterson is a gifted storyteller, scene painter and wordsmith who takes you on a rollicking white-water ride of adventure. Readers of all ages are sure to find North! Or Be Eaten worthy of a big mug filled with a favorite beverage and a cozy nook near a crackling fire for hours on end. Here there be tales within yarns within stories. Listen, reader, bend your ear, but keep an eye peeled lest the dreaded Fangs of Dang be near!”
–R. K. Mortenson, author of Landon Snow and The Auctor’s Riddle

Andrew Peterson is a singer-songwriter and author. Andrew has released more than ten records over the past twenty years, earning him a reputation for songs that connect with his listeners in ways equally powerful, poetic, and intimate. As an author, Andrew’s books include the four volumes of the award-winning Wingfeather Saga, released in collectible hardcover editions through Random House in 2020, and his creative memoir, Adorning the Dark, released in 2019 through B&H Publishing.

AP, Have tried for days in VAIN to order from the Rabbit Room, and it won’t let me-any thoughts? Usually it’s an AOL thing, but I cannot figure it out. Really want the book, really want it from you and reallly want it autographed (it’ll be worth something !). Got through Holly and Ivy and have moved to Amazing Grace on the dulcimer-Gabe better look out-I may be after his job…tee hee

  2. Mike

I really want to get these books in our school. I’m trying to work them in to my reading time. I teach 8th grade GA History so it might be hard. Thanks for these books Mr. Peterson.

  3. Diane

i have also been trying in vain to purchase your book through the rabbit room. My first book is autographed, and i would like the second one to be autographed also. i am really looking forward to reading the new book. i will try again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next.

Your gift with words is so precious, thanks for sharing.

I want to support the Clan of Peterson but the RR Store will not comply…Can you shoot me an email or let me know what I am doing wrong.

Dieta~ This happened to me when I was trying to order a coffee mug, which caused me to not even be in the running for the first 20. . .boo!!!
Anyway, I emailed and explained what was going on, and the response said that because of a new Apple Leopard software update, it was not able to process my Rabbit Room purchases (or all the tries I made). Then, we actually got a message from Apple that said one of it’s Leopard software updates was having a problem, and received a new update, and now I can purchase things from the Rabbit Room. Don’t know if that helps any, but if you have an Apple, and downloaded that faulty software update, perhaps that’s the reason.. . Hope it works out!

We’ve had a running countdown on our computer since March, and our pastor’s oldest son can’t stop asking if we’ve gotten “the book” yet. I’m anxiously awaiting the mail truck in hopes that it comes today!

  7. Chris

Having issues too…help! 🙂 Trying to order the bundle for my boys (who are finally old enough..wooohooo!) Click on the bundle and it keeps putting me back to the CD page without putting anything in my cart. Help! I want to give Andrew cash money to help support his writing habbit! 🙂

AP – will you have books for sale at concerts? We’re going to try and catch you in town in a couple of weeks. Just finished INKHEART yesterday. It was good, but I believe I enjoy your writing style quite a bit more than Cornelia’s. Shh, don’t tell her I said that.

  9. Peter B

Woohoo! I wonder when the pre-ordered copies will ship.

Now I’m torn. On one hand, I’m in the middle of a Wheel of Time re-read (yes, what was I smoking), which I’m sure I can find time to interrupt for a Peterson hiatus… but on the other hand, all these reviews and their mention of hot beverages and crackling fires… well, they almost make me want to wait until November (probably the earliest I can make use of those items here in Dallas).

Either way, another hearty woohoo! And congratulations, AP, on this latest milestone.

  10. Albi Odendaal

I have the same problem as many above trying to buy various things from the store. Any fixes yet?

  11. Andrew Peterson

Thank you guys for all the kind words. As for the Rabbit Room Store issues, allow me to vent:

We’re working on getting the new one up and running. In the meantime, if you’re having issues call Bragg Management at 615-352-5509 and place an order by phone. Sorry about the glitches, and thanks for the support.

Beware the toothy cows. And the lame store interface.

  12. Aaron Roughton

I ordered mine through BooksChristian.com and had no troubles, of course I just noticed that they show the ship date as 8/30/09. I’m assuming the delay is because these will be autographed, which will require Andrew to be tucked away in a room for the next two weeks thinking of very personal, touching messages to write in the cover of each book. Seriously, really looking forward to this one Andrew.

  13. E

Just finished the first installment (like yesterday) and I was blown away. My undergrad was English (with emphasis in literary criticism) and I love reading and thinking about those kinds of things. So much of that world is spending too much time in academic Crazyville, but there are folks who still are thoughtful and balanced and have heart.

This is an amazingly well written book. You really shouldn’t be able to do that for another 20 years or so.

I love your music so had fairly high expectations going in, but your writing is the kind of thing that will be re-read. And it will be as good as you remember it being – that’s really quite rare.

Buying a few copies to send to young friends and cousins, etc… they’ll love me forever.

It is a wonderful feeling to put your stuff along side Narnia and Tolkien for things I’ll get to read to my little girl when she is a bit older.

Looking forward to North! … and please keep writing.

Our family is waiting with bated breath for this book! We have been away from the Igibys for only a couple of months, and that’s just too long!!

We are so excited to continue on this journey!!

  15. friend

Curiously, this showed up on my bank account as a pending charge when I ordered it a week ago, but the charge has since disappeared. I wonder if I should place another order. Anybody else have this problem?

  16. Peter B

Thank for mentioning that, friend; you motivated me to check my own statement.

Looks like it went through on mine.

Sometimes (especially with my Paypal debit card), a hold shows up as a pending charge which is then canceled, but a new charge then shows up as completed. You might want to double-check just in case.

  17. friend

Thanks for the input, Peter. I’ve triple-checked, and this is definitely not the case. Now the store won’t even load, so I guess it’s time to give the good folks at Bragg a call.

  18. John Barber

I picked up my copy at Barnes and/or Noble today. It was sittin’ pretty right under the NEW IN SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY sign. Lovely, I tell ya…

  19. Matt G

Pre-ordered from Amazon; arrived yesterday; 11-year-old finished 5 chapters before being forced to go to bed.

  20. Peter B

    It’s here! It’s finally here!

Now to finish my daily duties so I can get down to (mostly) serious business.

  21. Dad

We finished the book last night…had to stay up past our bedtime to do it but couldn’t put it down. Great story! Great adventure! It was the best ending to a book that I have ever read…well, maybe second to Revelation’s last couple of verses!

  22. Christen

I love that you have Donita K. reviewing your book! She’s a favorite in this household! So excited to be getting your new book!!

  23. Robert Ross

Andrew, I got your books this week, thank you, great stories. Do you also have any news about the audio version of “North or be Eaten”
