Song of the Day: Andrew Peterson & Randall Goodgame

By

Last week? Aliens. This week? Pirates AND Aliens!

If you haven’t heard, Randall Goodgame is on the road these days with the Slugs and Bugs Live show and that taken in concert with Andy O’s sci-fi folk-rock last week told me there wasn’t a better song to feature today than “Dreams”. Why is it my favorite Slugs and Bugs song, you ask? Easy. Because it’s got dinosaurs, pirates, spelunking, and stun-rayed Zorbian fiends.

Pete Peterson is the author of the Revolutionary War adventure The Fiddler’s Gun and its sequel Fiddler’s Green. Among the many strange things he’s been in life are the following: U.S Marine air traffic controller, television editor, art teacher and boatwright at the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch, and progenitor of the mysterious Budge-Nuzzard. He lives in Nashville with his wife, Jennifer, where he's the Executive Director of the Rabbit Room and Managing Editor of Rabbit Room Press.

I have just discovered this CD in the last two weeks, and I am happily 6 years old again. My children think I’ve lost it-so I must be doing something right.:) Thanks to RG and AP for this rompus room of a CD.

We have really fallen in love with this CD. “Bears” was the only song I could sing our first child asleep to. Now at three years old, we hear “tractor, airplane song please” or “tiger song, please” each time we get in the car (followed undoubtedly by “nother one, nother one”). We even painted a quote from this song on a wall in our playroom. My wife and I have been so thankful for this children’s music CD that doesn’t cause us to want to choke a purple dinosaur or something after we drive about town.

In fact, Matt is so in love with this cd that he gave us a copy when our oldest was born, and we sing songs from it every night as well. Our favorite game now is for me to pause while singing, and my son fills in the words with a giggle.
There is truly nothing better than:
    “He sent…” “His son!”,
    “His only…” “one!”,
“To fill me up and…” “make me new!”

Yea! Thanks for those comments y’all. And Pete, it’s no wonder this is your favorite as the Rabbit Room resident boatwright. Dreams has more of a Jimmy Buffett-y feel than any song AP has ever come up with. Paul Eckberg amicably obliged us with his best ship’s bell imitation to go with the 3/4 time pirate ship vibe. Yo ho ho!

Bears, for sure. My wife did not quite appreciate me putting it on repeat for about 20 minutes..

Have had this cd for a couple of years and it is a favorite to listen to with my son and daughter. My son loves “Tractor, Tractor,” and plays the role of Randall very well. He is a very sensible little fellow and does not like it when Andrew makes the Rocket harvest the wheat, etc. He says, “Mommy, a rocket can’t harvest the wheat!” Randall can you make it to Ohio sometime soon???

I’ve allways thought this song would make a great children’s book. There are so many funnty pictures in this song. Might I suggest illustrations from Cory Godbey…
