I’ve always defined being an ‘artist’ along the same lines as Jim Carrey does in this film. Artists express their experiences or their inner emotions through a medium that others can also experience. For that reason, I’ve never really considered myself an artist. The films I create and the little writing I do usually conveys another person’s idea or experience, not my own. The experiences described in this film are foreign to me, but I’m drawn to them because the artist is honest and vulnerable about something inside himself.

When I heard Jim Carrey say “We want to show ourselves and have that be accepted.” it reminded me of a couple of things a couple of my heroes have said:
“I’m afraid if I open myself to be known, I’ll be seen and despised and be left all alone.” -Andrew Peterson from The Rain Keeps Falling
and again, “I think, the thing everybody really wants to know is not what the theory of relativity is. But I think what we all really want to know is whether we’re loved or not.” -Rich Mullins
Like Matt said above, I appreciate the refreshing honesty and vulnerability that Jim Carrey exhumed in the film. That is what draws us in.
