Thank you for compiling and sharing these reflections. His service to the Church continues, even in death. I have often thought of and prayed for you who knew and loved him.

It would have to be the many vivid ways John Heath-Stubbs portrays the mess we’re in, and the remarkable, deep truth that God chooses to enter the mess in order to redeem us. In Golgotha, the center/middle of the world and the human heart is “polluted”, “a midden”, “rubbish”, “garbage”. The Lord answers Adam’s desperate cry with “lips cracked with…[Read more]

Last week you mentioned a retreat you attended that helped you clarify your life’s mission. I’ve kept a journal for many years, and will often reread old entries in order to remember or re-discover aspects of myself. Can you talk about other spiritual practices that can help us to know ourselves?

For me, it would have to be Frederick Buechner. He’s not a poet, per se, but his work (both fiction and non-fiction) have been like poetry to me, always inviting deeper contemplation. Here’s my attempt at a poetic representation of what he’s meant to me.
It was you who first pointed the way

I can’t stop thinking about “The Bright Field” since I read it. I hadn’t read it before and I love it. I am a photographer who is hopelessly obsessed with light, and so the image of the sun breaking through “to illuminate a small field” is one that has stuck. Can you say something about how finding (and contemplating) beauty in the everyday can…[Read more]

Along with lots of people on here, I’ll be trying to limit my social media intake, especially resisting the temptation to reach for my phone when I first wake up. I’m also going to try practicing the Examen. It’s a spiritual practice that I’ve heard about many times, and I’m always intrigued. I’m going to give it a whirl this season.

Yeah, the social media fast is a good one. Thanks for mentioning this, particularly resisting the reach for the phone first thing. I’ll be doing that as well.

Hey everyone. I’m Chinwe and I live in Baltimore, Maryland. I wish I could say that I read lots of poetry, but I don’t. I’m more of an occasional dabbler, which is why I appreciate guides like Malcolm. I’ve used his “Waiting on the Word” as an advent companion over the last few years. There have been many poems that have intersected with my life,…[Read more]

Thanks so much for this. I’ve listened to this album a few times now since I first read this. As someone else mentioned, “The Blues” is so so moving this week. I also was able to share it with a friend (and fellow Switchfoot fan) who has been going through a tough time, and had also forgotten about this album. We have both been listening and…[Read more]

I love Laura Mvula! I’ve heard this song so many times and never thought about it the way you’ve beautifully described. I’ll definitely listen to it differently from now on. If you haven’t already, check out her gorgeous Tiny Desk session: http://www.npr.org/event/music/195516413/laura-mvula-tiny-desk-concert.
