What do we need from a New Year’s post? What do we say?
That it’s been hard? You don’t need the Rabbit Room to tell you that. That surely this year will be better? Being a poet doesn’t make you a prophet […]

Three cheers, Hannah. Beautiful.

This was a beautiful piece to read at midnight, while I fed our new baby. I needed to come back and read it again.
Thank you, Hannah, for the beautiful words and the reminder of what we have in Christ as we celebrate and remember, through Him, all things are made new. -
Brilliant!

“But I am free.” Love that so much. Also, Elisabeth Elliot has been a faithful guide for me with her wisdom and perspectives. What a great piece, Thank you!
Something similar….I just read earlier this morning a story of a missionary named James Calvert, who in 1838 sailed to the Fiji Islands with a team to share the gospel with the natives, known to be fierce cannibals. The ship’s Captain advised him, “You will lose your life and the lives with you if you go among such savages!” Calvert replied simply, “We died before we came here.” Sigh…goals. -
Amen, and amen. This is the word on peace we needed. Thank you, Amy. Thanks for the incorporation of scripture, and story, and truth. This re-centered me today.

We got a set of Cutco knives when we got married and have added to the set here and there as sons and daughters of friends have come along selling Cutco. My favorite is the petite santoku, which looks a lot like the first one John Cal shows in this week’s “In the Kitchen” video.

This is great stuff, Steve. I had forgotten about that scene from Ladybird (and I agree with you that it’s a wonderful movie).
Reading about Tara Isabella Burton’s husband checking the backs of the plates as he washed them reminded me of an anecdote I heard about Flannery O’Connor. A friend of a friend (or maybe a friend of a friend of a friend?…[Read more]

So struck by the idea, from Capon and here from you, of attention as a form of love. Thanks for sharing these links. The article hit so many good notes:
“You could spend your whole life looking at dogs, walking up and down the Upper East Side, and elucidating their particularities. So too words. So too dishes. So too the person you love.

In last Thursday’s discussion, Rob Hays made some trenchant observations about Thomas the Tank Engine and the nefarious messages about “usefulness” that Thomas is spreading among our youth. I asked him if he’d be willing to say more in hopes that it would generate more discussion here in the forum. Here’s what he wrote back:
My older boys (7 & 4)…[Read more]
