I just re-read the story again, to refresh my memory of it.
Does anyone else feel that, perhaps, the First Voice represents the Father, the Second Voice the Son, and the shepherd guide the Holy Spirit? And perhaps the Porter, the doctors, and other characters on Niggle’s journey are like angels?
I adore the description Tolkien writes of the…[Read more]

I think I was first awoken to the true art of fantasy books when I read THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH by Norton Juster as a kid. To this day I still own the same tattered copy and I read it at least once a year.
Reading the book for THE NEVERENDING STORY in my early 20s was a significant milestone in my spiritual journey as well. Though I didn’t realize…[Read more]

On May 8, 2012, it was announced that Maurice Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are and countless other books, had passed away.
As I got on the train to work that morning, browsing through Twitter on my […]

“From any perspective, art and beauty can give us a glimpse past the windows of our lives…” I love it. Reminds me of Rich mullion’s lyrics… “there’s more that rises in the morning than the sun / more that shines in the night than just the moon” or, of course, Andrew’s words: “like a golden sky on a summer’s eve your heart is tugging at your sleeve, and you cannot say why. There must be more…”

Haha, I ment Rich Mullins. Can I blame autocorrect on that one? The problem with leaving comments on a forum with real writers is that I’m always afraid my grammar and spelling will be wrong. Oh well.

Great story Joe! I too had several teachers in elementary school who had similar impacts on me, in encouraging my love for drawing and storytelling. It’s a great thing to be able to reflect back on the teachers who help us grow as artists.

I LOVE this article! Yet another reason to love The Rabbit Room! As a birder since childhood, I have a lifelong fascination with the Ivory Woodpecker. Here is a short poem I wrote about this bird.
O WHERE IS THE WOODPECKER
O where is the woodpecker with the white bill,
And where is his short trumpet call?

Hi Chris –
I too am still absorbing this album and its awesome-ness (awesominity? is there a word for that?). I’ve listened to it so many times, as I have with his “Bon Iver” album and the latest Volcano Choir release. I see this new record as such a mix of familiar and new – I’d define it as “soundscape”

I am a big fan of concept albums where all the songs put together in sequence tell a story. Looking back on the albums that have stuck with me all my life I see this as a constant thread, from PINK FLOYD THE WALL to THE WHO’S TOMMY and even the sci-fi concept records by Coheed & Cambria….even if all the details of the story are unclear or to…[Read more]

When I finished reading the series, I posted a playful review on my website. It’s spoiler free, and it involves Muppets.
